Each year my cousin hosts a Super Bowl potluck party my entire family attends. We enjoy good food, good family, and, hopefully, a good game! My husband and I are not only in charge of the chili bar this year (Yum!), we’re also bringing a few decorations to honor the first cold weather Super Bowl! I made this easy felt football table runner for the buffet (along with some cute football tissue poms I wrote about in another post), and it matches the blue and green color scheme perfectly.
Apart from helping to decorate the buffet, I also thought the runner might serve double duty as part of several Super Bowl Party Games. Aaron and I want to use it to host a paper football tournament on the dining room table. How fun! Make sure to follow my easy how-to post below to make your own Super Bowl table runner, and make sure to check out our other blue and green themed Cold Weather Super Bowl Party Ideas, too!
Materials
- Green felt
- 1 package ½” white binding (3 yards)
- 2 packages ¼” white binding (6 yards total)
- White thread
- Sewing scissors
- Sewing machine
- Straight pins
- Iron
- White puffy paint (optional)
Directions
- When you are creating your table runner, keep in mind these are the dimensions I used. Modify them to fit your party needs. See this diagram, too, for an easy visual: Green felt – 37”x18”; Each end zone – 5” long; Each 10 yards – 3” inches long; Each 5 yard marker – 1.5” (in the middle between ten yard lines)
- Begin by cutting a piece of green felt that is 37”x18”. Iron the felt to make sure there are no wrinkles.
- Measure the end zones and 10 yard lines, marking them on both sides of the “field” with straight pins.
- Iron the ¼” white binding, measure out 9 pieces of binding 18” long (the width of your field), and secure the binding onto the field with the straight pins that are already there. Add additional straight pins to secure the binding further if necessary.
- Next, cut 18 pieces of white binding are 1 ½” – 2” in length. Secure these at each half-way point (the 5-yard marker) between the 10-yard markers. Do this on each side of the field.
- Using a sewing machine with white thread, attach the binding to the green felt, removing straight pins as you go. Make sure to securely attach the 5-yard markers by reversing over your work.
- Now, finish off your football field runner by adding a white binding “sideline” to the outside edge. Iron your ½” white binding, and use straight pins to attach it to the edges. When pinning the corners, make sure the binding overlaps. Fold under the binding on top, so the edges don’t fray.
- Sew the “sidelines” with your sewing machine, and iron your field (on the reverse side) before displaying at your Cold Weather Super Bowl Party.
- Optional: You may decide to add puffy paint numbers to each 10-yard marker. Make sure that one number is on either side of the marker, like this: 5|0. Allow the paint to dry overnight before using.
