These easy football shaped tissue poms are great alternatives to balloons at your next Super Bowl party, and they also go with the blue and green color scheme we’ve designed as part of our collection of Cold Weather Super Bowl Party Ideas!
I’m planning on displaying these fun decorations on my cousin’s buffet at our annual Super Bowl Party. I’m also thinking about hanging a few of them above the dining room table in odd bunches, too. Either way, these poms will look cute when grouped on the buffet with my DIY Felt Super Bowl Table Runner (also pictured). After trying these simple poms by following my step-by-step tutorial below, make sure to take a look at our other Super Bowl Party Ideas for more decorating inspiration!
Materials (Makes 1 football pom)
- 10-15 sheets blue and/or green tissue paper
- Twist tie
- Scissors
- White cardstock
- PDF Football Laces Template
- Glue dots/Hot glue
- String (optional)
Directions
- First, set aside the number of tissue paper sheets you need (20x20 in size), depending on whether you want your football pom fluffy (10 sheets) or super fluffy (15 sheets).
- Stack the sheets in a neat pile. Next, you’ll be trimming the tissue paper on either side to begin creating a football shape. If you’re working with 10 sheets of paper, trim the top two sheets by five inches on both sides, and trim the next two sheets by two inches on both sides. Flip your stack over, and do the same thing to the other side.
- If you’re working with 15 sheets of paper instead, trim the top three sheets by five inches on both sides, and trim the next three sheets by two inches on both sides. Flip the stack over, and do the same thing on the other side.
- Next, fold your paper stack accordion style (1”-1 ½” at a time) until it is completely folded. Secure it in the middle with a twist tie.
- Then, fan out each individual piece of tissue paper until the pom is all fluffed out.
- When you hold the pom on its side, it should resemble a football (or at least be ovalish in shape).
- Print the PDF Football Laces Template, trace the laces onto white card stock, and cut them out.
- Using hot glue or glue dots, attach the laces onto the side of the football pom. Give the pom a final fluff before hanging or displaying as a centerpiece.
- Optional: You can choose to hang your pom, too. All you have to do is tie a length of string to the twist tie before fluffing your pom. A group of these hanging above a buffet or table in blue and green Cold Weather Super Bowl colors would draw any guest’s eye!
