Even though this DIY disco ball took some time to make, the effort was worth it after seeing the reactions of family and friends at the 70s Disco Party honoring my mom’s 58th birthday! Made from old cds, it made a huge impact hanging over the makeshift dance floor we set up in the living room.
If you’re looking to host a 70s theme bash, make sure to pay attention to your decorations, including decking out your venue in neon colors and centerpieces in honor of musical greats from the 70s, like Elton John and the Village People. To make my disco ball, follow the easy tutorial below, and check out some of our other 70s Disco Party Ideas to help get your guests in the mood to boogie!
Materials (makes 1 disco ball)
- 6” Styrofoam ball (can be larger)
- Silver spray paint
- 8-10 cds
- Heavy kitchen scissors
- Large pot
- Tongs
- 1 jewelry eyehook
- Hot glue
- Black string
Directions
- First, spray paint the Styrofoam ball in a well-ventilated area, allowing it to dry for 1-2 hours. Do this so any space showing inbetween the cd squares won't stand out.
- While the ball is drying, take the time to cut your cds. So they don’t shatter, make sure to heat the cds one at a time in a pot of boiling water. In order to do this, submerge them with tongs. Keep the cd in the boiling water for several minutes, but remove it before it becomes warped.
- While the cd is still warm, cut it into small squares using a heavy duty pair of kitchen scissors. Make sure to cut the cds over a paper towel in order to catch stray shards. Keep any triangular pieces as well. These will help you fill in holes at the top and bottom of the ball.
- After cutting the cds into even squares, begin to attach the squares to the Styrofoam ball with hot glue. To create an even first row, I wrapped a string around center of the ball and traced along it with a permanent marker. I then glued the squares along that even line.
- Before gluing squares to the top of the ball, insert a jewelry eyehook and secure it with hot glue. Tie a length of black string to the eyehook and hang above the dance floor for a groovy time!
- Tip: In order to clean your disco ball, wet a paper towel with glass cleaner and wipe thoroughly.
