If you need a few Christmas Party Ideas to keep the kiddos entertained at your next holiday get-together, look no further! I’ve come up with five games that are great for the holidays and light on the wallet, too. Most of the materials for these five games can already be found around the home. All you need is an active group of kids in the Christmas spirit! After trying a few of the games below, make sure to check out some of our other Christmas Party Games, too.
- Find Your Christmas Carol: Before the game, write Christmas carols on slips of paper. (There should be two slips for each song.) To start, begin with an even number of players. There should be an equal number of slips of paper as there are players. The kids choose a slip from the basket, and when an adult says go, they each begin humming their carol. The object of the game is that each player must find their “partner” (the person who is humming the same tune). When partners find each other, they have to shout “Merry Christmas!” to let everyone know they’ve won! TIP: Use easily recognizable carols for this game, such as Silent Night, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Frosty the Snowman.
- Decorate the Christmas Tree: Divide players into teams of three, and have one person be a “Christmas Tree” in each group. Give each team a bucket with green crepe and Christmas decorations, like plastic ornaments, bows, ribbons, garland, and tinsel. Set a timer for five minutes. In that time, the other two players must “decorate” the designated “Christmas Tree.” Stop players after five minutes, and have the trees strut their stuff on a runway. Judges should award prizes for the best trees. A fun way to do this is based on the price of different types of actual Christmas trees. “Scotch Pine Award” for third place (inexpensive tree), “Douglas Fir” for second place (moderately priced tree), and “White Spruce” for first place (expensive tree). Give a sympathy award for the worst team; title the prize “The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Award.”
- Christmas Cranium Cartoons: Pass out a paper plate and pen to each player. Choose one person to run the game, and give him or her a printout of a Christmas living room picture, like this one. Tell all of the other participants to put the plate on top of their heads. The person running the game must then
describe the picture to the players (a fireplace with a fire on the left hand side with two Christmas cards and candles on top; a Christmas tree on the right hand side with ornaments, garland, and a bright star on top; etc, etc, etc). While the picture is described, players must draw it with a marker while the plate is
on top of their heads. This silly game results in some pretty ridiculous pictures, but the player with the best (and most accurate) drawing wins Make sure to hand out gold, silver, and bronze medals to the winners! - Christmas Memory Game: Before beginning the game, organize an assortment of Christmas items on a tray (try to get 15-20 items). Put the tray on the table for 15-20 seconds, and tell players to memorize as many of the items as they can. Remove the tray, and pass out paper and pens. Players have one minute to write down as many of the items as they can remember. The player with the most correct items wins! Make sure to give the winner a fun prize as a reward. (Wrapped dollar store toys and candy work well!)
- Snowman Building Contest: Divide players into groups of three, and give them fifteen minutes to build a snowman. In addition, fill a plastic tub with a limited number of hats, scarves, gloves, and carrots, and place it in a designated area. Although this sounds like a traditional game, it’s a lot of fun because players compete for the best resources. Teams must build faster and faster to get the enough snow, a pair of mittens or a hat, and even a carrot for noses. If it comes to it, begin allowing teams to start sabotaging each other’s snowmen (as long as it doesn’t come to all out destruction). After 15 minutes, have judges award prizes for the “Fattest Snowmen,” “Best Dressed Snowman,” as well as an award for the team who completes their snowman the fastest.
