Ahoy, again! After the Pirate Spyglass and DIY Pirate Hook posts, I bring you the final installment of my DIY pirate costume series. To complete your pirate look, all you need now is a parrot friend to perch on your shoulder as you order the scallywag crewman to Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!
This easy to make craft is perfect for the kiddos to design and decorate, so encourage them to be creative and get in the pirate spirit! After giving all three crafts a try for “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” consider making them not only a part of today’s celebration, but also include them as fun DIYs at a kids’ Pirate Adventure party or as part of a themed Halloween Pirate Party in October. Good luck, mateys, and may your pirate parties be rowdy, raucous, and full of booty!
Materials (makes one parrot)
- Assorted wrapping papers/construction paper
- Plastic, paper, or Styrofoam cup
- Thin ribbon
- White cardstock
- Orange construction paper.
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Glue/Tape
Directions
- Poke two holes with scissors in either side of the cup, and tie a thin ribbon through each hole to make a loop. Have the wearer try the cup on to make sure the loop fits (slide the cup up the arm to the shoulder). Then, wrap the cup in red wrapping or construction paper, securing the paper to the cup with tape.
- Make wing pieces (in three different colors to create layers), and attach to the sides of the cup using glue.
- Make a head with two circles, the larger with red paper and the smaller with white. Glue the two together, and add eyes and any other decorations (such as green fringe.)
- Cut a diamond shape in half from the orange construction paper, and glue to the face for a beak. Attach the head of the parrot to the cup, and voila!
Enjoy your pirate costumes, and surprise everyone at your school, office, or at home with these fun DIYs!
