Well, it’s that time of year again. Beginning mid-November or so, the parties will start. The food will be abundant. The buffets bountiful. The dinners delicious and profuse. Our cups will runneth over….with eggnog, wine and loaded punch (with sugar is what I mean).
I’m scared, and I’m worried. Frankly, I can’t control myself. The mushroom tartlets and avocado dip, the crab dip with baked cheese on top, the honey-baked ham spiral cut with that sugared crust, the turkey with mild pork Italian stuffing, the sweet potato pie and, of course, the peanuts at the bar—all beckon me with a light that shines brighter than the north star.
I can’t wait, but I can. So what am I to do? I just read if you drink two glasses of water before you eat, you won’t be able to stuff yourself with empty calories. But I’m not thirsty. I could increase my exercise, but from nothing to something probably won’t help. Or I could decline an invitation—but why punish my friends and colleagues by not showing up?
There you have it. I’m going. To everything. I’m eating. And I’m eating big. I’ll gain weight and I’ll cry and be sad and cover it up with a tunic. But I’ll be happy…that is, until resolution time. And then I’ll be resolute to never do it again—until next year!
Happy holidays.
