So in preparation for my big summer bash went in search of the best grilling tips. I asked my co-workers, my Facebook friends, my neighbor, and many others about what they knew about grilling that I didn't.
Some things I had already gleaned; don't buy cheap meat, cook over coals not flames, make sure the propane tank is filled..but I also found out some surprising tips that I had never heard! And maybe you haven't either, so I will share my new found grilling wisdom -
- One friend mists the food with wine as she grills. She fills a spray bottle (white for white foods like chicken and seafood; red for red meats) and mists as she cooks to the food moist and add flavor.
- Safety tip from my Dad - "Never light a gas grill with the lid closed". Which I do all the time. Bad news, since gas can build up and ignite. Boom! You betcha I will remember this one.
- This one I heard from a few people "Don't press your burgers down with the spatula." And why not? Doesn't it help them cook? Apparently not. It just squeezes out the flavor (ie the fat) and makes the grill flare up. Now you tell me.
- New to me, but I guess if you use sauces on your meat while it is grilling, you should make sure it does not contain any sugar. Sugar burns at a low temperature and will burn onto the meat creating a charred, unappetizing crust. Which explains why my BBQ sauce marinaded burgers ALWAYS burn.
