Last year we went to New Orleans and visited Café du Monde, the French Quarter’s premier beignet shop. Now that we are planning a Mardi gras theme party for our Super Bowl Sunday (it's in New Orleans this year) my first thought for dessert is that fabulous fried dough. Worth every calorie people!
Beignets are not inherantly easy to do as a party recipe since you need to stand there and fry them. Normally I don't do anything that involved for parties, but I think I made it as "fuss free" as possible.
I used my electic frying pan to fry up the beignets 5 or 6 at a time. This helps me keep an even temperature which is important for making the beignets puff up.
I used Café du Monde beignet mix, since I am lucky enough to have a grocery that carries it. You can also mix up your own (here is one from Paula Deen, and another one from Food.com that doesn't use yeast)
My table was set up with beignet toppings. Guests can grab their treats still warm and fix them up how they want.
Beignet Station Topping Ideas
I also set out the coffee pot, since nothing goes better with beignets!
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate syrup
- Fresh strawberries
- Custard
- Whipped cream
- Cinnamon sugar
- Fruit sauces and jams
- Chocolate frosting
- Ice cream
