Today is my birthday, and I am reminded by the warm weather and sunshine how much I love being a May baby. My sister usually has a warm early September birthday too, and we are lucky to be able to have parties held outdoors most years (we live in Cleveland so it is not always a given).
This Friday we are having a cookout in our backyard, partially a birthday party for me, mostly just a great time to kick off the BBQ season. Since it is my birthday in my backyard, I get to call the shots. There are a few things I always have at my cookouts –
- My favorite menu – The guest of honor should always see their faves in the spread. For me that is hot dogs (blackened) and potato salad. Here is an excellent German Potato Salad recipe. Brian recently shared his yummy ribs recipe. I am available to taste test.
- A little decoration please – I am not expecting anything elaborate, but a few balloons and some tiki torches would be nice (hint hint). Splurge on a little crepe paper and make me feel special. Get out the picnic table cloths and dress the backyard up a bit. Last year we used Halloween tablecloths; not appropriate but at least it was colorful.
- Bring on the lawn games – We do bocce ball and cornhole, but there are other great summer party games too. Just lay off the lawn darts. Here are some rules for summer party games.
- And my just desserts – this year I requested pie. Other great options? Strawberry shortcake, sundaes, smoothies, s’mores … and of course you can have cake.

Happy Birthday to me. Bring on the pie!
