This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Tuesday, a school night. Is that not the perfect excuse to have a party at my house so no one has to go to a bar and spend their whole wad on drinks? Am I a good friend or what? Of course, I can’t afford to go it totally alone in these economic times (even WITH the bailout) so all of my guests will have to pitch in. Here’s how:
“It’s BYOB—bring your own bottle if you want the hard stuff.” On the other hand, being the wonderful hostess that I am, I will provide a fabulous spiked punch (in green of course), and maybe I’ll add some lime sherbet to float hither and yon.
“It’s potluck—bring a covered dish to share.” I’m going to give choices (from Irish stew and Reuben sandwiches to corned beef pizza—yes there is such a thing), and let them bring whatever they want as long as it’s themed. I don’t care if they cut it in the shape of a clover, cook it in a green dish or saturate it with green food coloring…as long as it has something to do with the color green, with St. Patrick’s Day or it’s done with a wee bit o’ fun. I’ll provide veggies (anything green with Green Goddess dressing, of course), snacks (like green Rick Krispie treats…ooooh, I love those) and green soft drinks (minimally, 7UP and Mountain Dew come in green bottles).
“It’s easy—wear green.” That’s it. I’ll supply beads, I’ll supply Irish hats, blowers and tiaras, and I’ll supply at least one lapel pin (and it won’t say, “Kiss me, I’m Irish!”). But before the party starts, I’ll decorate with all these goodies and save, save, save. I might even tint the toilet water green, and I still won’t be spending over $100.
Finally, my Irish eyes will be smiling if all of my guests go out and spend the money they didn’t spend at their local bar. Why? Because I’ll have done my part to fix the economy. And that’s no blarney!
Happy St. Patricks Day!

I know what you mean, Party Girl!
I am definitely having a recession-proof St. Patty's Day Party at home this time instead of spending so much money at bars. Potluck sounds good. I m pretty excited to prepare some green recipes, and even green beer!
